By the time we make it home from dinner, Noel is jumpy from his dessert so I suggest he play some video games before bed. Lucy agrees and decides to join him. I still feel terrible about what happened earlier so I decide to give them some alone time. I head to my room and find another book on my nightstand, this time with a note attached to the front.

‘Because you asked for something less romantic, this will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end’- Luce

I change into some pajamas and climb into bed with the new book. Lovesick by Cynthia A. Rodriguez, the name sounds familiar but I’m impressed she managed to find another indie author I haven’t read yet. I start reading and from the beginning I’m hooked on this Bonnie and Clyde retelling. Page by page, I’m intrigued by their story and terrified of how it might end. A few times I consider skipping to the end just to see if they get a happy ending but I don’t. I need to find out for myself so I keep reading. No matter how much I want to skip ahead.

“Hey, Noel just wanted to say goodnight.” Lucy stands in the doorway with Noel, both dressed in their pajamas. I had left my door open just in case they had needed anything.

“Sorry, I was reading. Is it bedtime already?” I check the clock on my nightstand and realize it’s after eight thirty.

“For Noel, yes.” Lucy chuckles. I stand to give Noel a quick hug and he heads to his room.

“I’m in love with this book. The writing is absolutely fantastic.”

“She’s one of my most underrated authors. I’ve been trying to sign her as a client,” she explains.

“Well, you definitely should, her books would fly off the shelves.” If they are as half as good as this one.

“Mama!” Noel calls, and Lucy excuses herself to tuck him in.

I climb back into bed and continue reading. It’s past two am when I finally finish and I throw the book across the room. Almost immediately, Lucy comes running in with a crazy look on her face.

“Are you okay?” she whisper yells. My lamp is still on so I can see her dressed in her pajamas, hair in a messy blonde bun, and an eye mask on her forehead.

“Yes.” I pause.

“I heard a loud noise, I was making sure you were okay,” she explains.

“I threw a book,” I whisper shyly. Now I feel like an idiot.

“You threw a book?” she asks.

“I threw a book,” I repeat.

“Maybe I’m half asleep but can I ask why?”

“I was angry about how it ended.”

“You were angry?” Lucy walks in and sits on the edge of my bed.

“The whole book I’m rooting for this thing to happen and then it just doesn’t?! I was shocked and upset, so I threw the book. I’m sorry I woke you up,” I add.

“It’s okay.” She smiles. “I’m glad you liked it.”

“Who said I liked it?” I gasp.
